Why I’ll Never Date Someone Who Doesn’t Believe in Feminism
I n recent months, Facebook, like Apple, has made a concerted attempt to make gains in the world of streaming. And RelationShipped, in which Facebook users vote first for the bachelor and then nominate different women to vie for his affection, runs roughly along those same lines. It plays like a populist, social media-driven version of The Bachelor or, really, any number of dating shows that succeeded it. They are available, charming, and cut like marble; Jason S, by way of a crowdsourced voting process taking place mainly in the comments section, is selected to move on to the mansion phase.
But RelationShipped upends the traditions of its dating-show predecessors in various ways, its most cruel maneuver being the way contestants are eliminated. Instead of bestowing carnations upon the ladies who live to see another day, Jason S hands Shaelyn an envelope that contains her flight ticket home.

My speechless response must have divulged my horror. Are you one of those crazy American feminists? Although I founded my university’s “Girl Boss” Women in Business club and am the frontwoman of an all-girl rock band , I had never considered myself a crazy feminist. Back in my hometown of Seattle, my allegiance paled in comparison to girls with “boys suck” tattoos, patriarchy protesters who threw out their shaving razors, and musicians in girl bands who sang about their periods.
Meanwhile, I invested in overpriced shaving cream and wrote ballads to guys who had treated me like shit. I myself have never been able to figure out precisely what feminism is: I only know that people call me a feminist whenever I express sentiments that differentiate me from a doormat. When asked if one believes in feminism, the answer is often a “yes, but” with whatever follows completely overriding any claims of being a feminist.
When it comes to the notorious “yes, but” I’ve heard a plethora of excuses. These arguments range from the practical and economic “It’s unfair for women to simultaneously expect to receive an equal wage and have men pay for dinner” to the flowery philosophical “There’s man and there’s woman. Woman was created to be soft and beautiful, and man to be strong and brave.
Anyone who denies this is deeply confused” Eventually, the argument returns to me pointing out that feminism is simply the belief that men and women should be treated as equals. Which to me seems as obvious as the fact people shouldn’t be oppressed due to the color of their skin or their sexual orientation, or any other trait. The anti-feminists seemed confused about some of this as well.

By Mary Kate Engstrom. With a female to male ratio, the odds are stacked against straight NYU girls when it comes to finding a straight male mate. Taking into account the sizable gay population here, the search for a boyfriend may sometimes seem depressingly hopeless. While a number of girls found this article to be true to experience, many people found the post to be insulting. As a result, NYU Local reached out to a few straight guys to see how they felt about the post and to get their perspective on how their dating lives are going.
Straight Dude, Number One. What was your reaction to the Buzzfeed post? I thought it was pretty funny because parts of it are true. Whereas if you go to another college, most likely that person is straight, but the fact that you question it here kind of speaks to the population. How has your dating experience at NYU been? I think the city definitely changes people. Everyone has a sort of independent career oriented mindset, so relationships are often secondary.
Has anyone here ever assumed you were gay? Did the females to males ratio attract you to NYU?

He is the middle child of two sisters, Christy and Whitney. Growing up in Pflugerville, Yang’s family was one of the few Asian Americans in their community. He struggled with body image issues and low self-esteem as, in his own words, no one looked like him, and suffered bullying due to his appearance. Early on, he lost his Texan accent by the prodding of his sister, who told him he might face difficulties getting into Ivy League schools. I always assumed that my otherness was a curse — that I would be held back by my Asian and queer identities.

But few things rock potential relationships more than one partner feeling insecure — and dating someone sexually fluid can feel threatening to even the most secure individuals. That fear often stems from a misunderstanding of what it means to be bisexual. Monosexuals — those who are exclusively attracted to one gender — who have a hard time wrapping their minds around dating non-monosexuals are likely falling prey to such negative misperceptions.
They may spurn them to avoid bi people romantically altogether, or even engage in damaging biphobia. The sexualization stems from visualizing bisexuality not as a sexual identity on par with heterosexuality or homosexuality, but as a sex act. There may be other things about your bi partner that may make them undateable. Being bi is not one of them. Being attracted to multiple genders allows bisexuals to be attracted to individuals for far more than just their physical appearance.
